Box tops for schools

We are collecting box tops for schools from Nestle cereal packets. We can use them to buy new books for the library. So when you’ve finished your Shreddies or Cheerios, please cut out the box top, bring it to the library and pop it in the collection box on the issue desk!

Author visit – who next?

Following in the footsteps of Sophie McKenzie, we are looking for suggestions for the next author visit. Who would you like to come and speak to your year next term? Remember the author will probably need to be British and likely to come to school (don’t suggest JK Rowling!). Please add your suggestions to the forum in the VLE Library section.

Competitions

National book week: The winner of the ‘design a book cover’ competition was Lizzie Burrell 7C. Lizzie was presented with her prize during the Y7 Assembly. Her winning entry can be seen on the Library notice board.

November is National Novel Writing Month: why not try and write a novel in a month

Red House: Red House is running a competition for Young Writer’s. The story has to be 1000 words or less and the winning entries will be published.

Wicked Young Writers Award: The Wicked Young Writers’ Award has been established to recognise excellence in writing, encourage creativity and help develop writing talent in young people.

Carole Ann Duffy

The UK’s first female Poet Laureate visited the school to talk to students and parents on the evening of 8^th November. The evening was a great success. For anyone who was at the talk or for those who missed it, the Library has a few books by Carol Ann Duffy available to loan so please come and take a look!

Sophie McKenzie school visit

Sophie McKenzie visited the school on Wednesday 6^th October. She talked about her latest book to Yr 8’s and signed copies of Blood Ransom. We have lots of new Sophie McKenzie books, including copies of her new book Blood Ransom in the library – come and take a look!

YR7 Booked up swap box

All Year 7’s now been issued with the free book they chose from the Booked up scheme. We also have copies of all the books in the library which are available to borrow! When Y7’s have read their chosen book the Library will operate a swap box for those that have read their book and wish to trade in their book for another one from the scheme.

Booktrust Teenage Prize 2010

The winner of the Booktrust Teenage Prize 2010 has been announced as Gregory Hughes for his novel ‘Unhooking the Moon’. We have copies of all six of the wonderful novels short-listed for the Prize.

New Fiction

We have lots of new fiction in the library. You can view the full list on the library section of the VLE, the printed lists in the library or via Library Thing (http://www.librarything.com/catalog/Challonersnewbooks).

Come and have a look at the New Books display in the library and see a selection of our new titles.

We have tried to get some complete sets of books, by authors such as Sophie McKenzie, Cathy Cassidy and Cathy Hopkins. We have also completed series where we already had one or more titles – such as the Rachel Caine Morganville Vampire series, Meg Cabot’s Airhead and Suzanne Collins Hunger Games series. We also have the first book in a new series of books by Percy Jackson author Rick Riordan – The Kane Chronicles – The Red Pyramid.
